Life in Color (Dayglow) – Steve Aoki

This past week on October 19th, in East Lansing Michigan at Michigan State University, EDM DJ Steve Aoki Life in Color- Dayglowperformed for over 7000 screaming Spartans. I was apart of the team that brought Steve Aoki to East Lansing. It was by far one of the craziest Dayglows I have been to. What made the night even more special was that Steve Aoki was deemed the number 15th best EDM DJ in the world. He celebrated the night away with 7000 of his closest friends.

Painted PromotersPreparing for this show was just like any other rave, however, paint was a new factor that DJ, Steve Aoki was not familiar with. This was his first Dayglow and wont be his last. I had the pleasure of meeting Steve Aoki back stage. I am a big fan of EDM and was stoked to work with such a large artists. I was responsible for his rider for the night which required me to get all his alcohol and props for the show.

I love being in the music scene and this was just the correct opportunity further in that direction.Dayglow

Here are some pictures snapped from Steve Aoki’s rider.

GRiZ

, is a DJ and artist from the Michigan State community who is making it big. He dropped out of college in order to fulfill his dream as a musician. is a 22 year old DJ who is gaining a lot of attention with his latest album, “Mad Liberation“. (Available free for download at www.mynameisgriz.com). Artists such as and have been making some buzz over the latest album release via facebook and twitter. Aong with Big Gigantic as well who is on tour with this fall.

GRiZ - Mad Liberation

Mad Liberation in GRiZ‘s words, “Is a collection of songs that I have been working on for the past year that ranged from mostly original compositions to varied sample work (retro vinyl recordings and new all original recordings); digital synthesis that took me weeks to master; to live instrumentation tediously and soulfully recorded by myself and some of my very good friends.”

Mad Liberation in my mind is a packed filled album showcasing the talent of this young man. I personally know and have seen him grow in talent and in popularity. He is one of the most humbling guys you will ever meet. His new album shows his success over time and his changing styles of music. I had the pleasure of being with him as he worked on tracks over the summer and saw first hand the emotion he put behind his music. He is extremely picky and is a perfectionist to say the least. Even with his album artwork he had trouble nearing down which artwork he liked the best. He settled on one, in which shows his message off his new album and what Mad Liberation is.

Go take a listen to his new album and check out some of his older work as well. Your ears are in for a treat.

Electronic Dance Music (EDM)

Image

As the Red Bull Student Brand Manager at Michigan State, I have become very involved in the music industry. I have booked multiple DJs, brought different artists and events to the MSU community and have helped promote for other events. Music has always been around in our life’s, with different genres fading in and out. In our modern day and society, the rise of electronic music is becoming popular. Electronic music once made an appearance in the music industry back in the 1980′s however, the popularity has grown since then. With today’s modern technology the popularity of electronic music and DJing has grown substantially. While working for Red Bull, I have witnessed first hand music fade away and other genres pick back up. Hip hop and rap are falling off and many people are switching to electronic music or better know as EDM (Electronic Dance Music).

EDM is a type of music that is quickly taking over the United States and the world. Its popularity started in Eurpoe and making its way to the United States. The type of Electronic Dance Music has multiple styles, all incorporating around the basic idea of electronic. This type of music is usually performed and produced by disc jockeys (DJs). It is highly found in night clubs and musicVeld Music Festival- Toronto, Canada festivals. DJs have transformed from artist mixing tracks using vinyl records to having digital records. Instead of using the traditional vinyl record DJ system, many DJs have transferred into MIDI pads, controllers and CDJs. However, the classic vinyl record spinners are still around. For production purposes a DJ will use different software such as Ableton or Sarato and digital equipment that hook up to a computer to make a song before a performance. While in a performance setting, a DJ will mix in their own songs along with other artists songs in one continuous track with no pauses giving a party feel. These types of concerts are more of a big dance party rather then a concert, they are know as raves. If you have never been to an EDM rave I highly recommend in doing so. I have had some of my most pleasurable times at electronic events and have memories that will last a life time.
